KNOWLEDGE POINT

The background investigation process does not penalize you for your past actions. Admitting to something in your past will not lead to further punishment.

I do not want to give the impression that I was always a perfect child. When I went away to college, I experimented with drugs and alcohol, as most kids who go to college do, though it is not something I condone. College is often a liberating time for young people. The most common experience for college students is to live away from the home where they grew up, in student housing or a rental apartment. Therefore, it is the first time that they are living entirely free of their parents’ supervision. Imagine not being told when to go to bed or when to get up, when or what to eat, when to do your homework or when to be home. You are expected to figure those things out on your own. You will have classes and homework, but the college will not force you to attend. There will simply be consequences if you do not (like expulsion). Nevertheless, you get to make your own choices. Within that freedom are the opportunities to experiment with alcohol, drugs, your sexuality, and many other things. As is often the case with trying new things, many young people do the things they like, such as drinking or drugs, to excess. It is only natural. To find your comfort zone, you often have to experience the unpleasantness of exceeding your limits. The problem with drinking too much or doing drugs is that your judgment becomes impaired and your inhibitions lowered. For drinking, the act itself is illegal if you are underage. For most drugs, it does not matter what age you are: they are illegal. Furthermore, when you do careless, dangerous, or foolish things, if those actions are also illegal, the problems multiply.

Your past may already include an official record of an unfortunate incident with alcohol or drugs. After all, almost everyone, at some point or other, drinks too much, and many people try drugs. If you are worried about this being disclosed in a background investigation, remember that the investigation is not looking at your history to punish you further. It is looking to determine whether you have a problem. If you are honest about a problem and can demonstrate that you have paid the appropriate dues to society and that you have learned not to repeat the illegal behavior, you can very likely get past the problem in the investigation.

Some events in your past may have been due to your own irresponsibility, while others may have been due to your age, family, social network, or simply a lack of understanding of the consequences of your actions. Through your honesty, you let people know that you have learned from your past and have moved on. You should never attempt to hide the negative events in your past. Remember that we live in the age of information. The truth is
